Pentagon Plastics recently had the honour of hosting the third BPF (British Plastics Federation) Factory Tour. On Wednesday 11th October, managing director Paul Edwards and the whole team welcomed guests from leading companies, including Tex Plastics, Broanmain, Lysis Technologies, Numatic and Sharpak. Also in attendance was Richard Brown, a guest speaker from RJG Technologies, a company known for providing award-winning training for moulders.
Insightful talks and factory tour
Opening the event, Dr Sara Cammarano of the BPF highlighted the benefits to members of the SIMPL (Safety in Manufacturing Plastics) initiative; an industry-led programme focused on improving health and safety in the plastics industry. Launched in October 2010, they work closely with the HSE. Handing the floor to Paul Edwards of Pentagon Plastics Group, Paul delivered an overview of the group’s rich history and insight into the goals and potential hurdles of the future.
This was followed by Richard Brown speaking to the attendees about the ever prevalent skills gap issue faced by the industry and gave an insightful talk on available training and apprenticeships in the UK. The overall message was that whilst machines should be renewed and updated as a key area of investment, it is ultimately essential to have the skilled staff to operate them with advanced levels of processing knowledge to see a return on investment. Such an ethos should be encouraged by management teams.
Following the wealth of useful and relevant information provided in the talk, the factory tour began with guests guided through the manufacturing facilities of the group companies looking at the moulding processes, the expanse of toolroom capabilities and post moulding operations. Rounding off a very busy morning the event finished up with a great networking lunch allowing attendees to discuss the information and activities from the morning to enhance their visit.
Showcasing the business
The Pentagon Plastics Group have over 45 years experience and were thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the business to industry peers, particularly after an extensive investment programme undertaken in the past few years.
Paul Edwards says, “I was very proud that the BPF asked us to host this event and it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase what we have been doing over the last 6 years at Pentagon. I strongly believe that the plastics industry in the UK will go from strength to strength provided those in it work together but it is also essential that we encourage people to join the industry at all levels.
A big thank you has to go out to all of our staff who rallied round to make sure we looked our best and their enthusiasm was infectious! “
Dr Sara Cammarano says, “We are very grateful to Pentagon Plastics Group for accepting to hosting the factory tour and for the great organisation of the event. We were delighted with the feedback from this event, which offered a unique opportunity to learn about a fascinating growing company while viewing both its injection moulding and tooling facilities. Visitors were also offered excellent insight into available apprenticeship schemes and reported that the day provided first-rate networking opportunities too. “
