The final chapter for ‘Team Kirkham’ and Children with Cancer…..

It seems a long time ago now when my close friend David Kirkham from Horsham first considered running the London Marathon 2013. It is a personal goal that he would like to achieve and at the same time take the opportunity to raise money for Children with Cancer, a charity that has become close to his heart over the last 8 months.

David has followed a strict training program since the turn of the year to get himself in shape for the event. He only started running about 18 months ago as a way to keep fit and an exercise he could share with his wife Jane who has four Marathons under her belt including London twice.

At a very early stage David asked his wife Jane, myself (Paul) and my wife Tracey to help him with his training and fundraising nicknaming us ‘Team Kirkham’ which has stuck!!! The fundraising has included team sponsorship for the Chichester 10K in February, the Hastings 1/2 Marathon in March and a well supported Race Night at the Holbrook Club in Horsham.
David says “I have been really pleased with how the training has gone and amazed by all the help and good wishes I have received. Going out running as a group has certainly helped me and Team Kirkham have been out pounding the streets through all the bad weather the winter could throw at us including the snow and ice. I am not sure whether I would have had the will power to see it through without the Team behind me but I feel in really good shape and can’t wait for the race to start.”
On the day David will don his Children with Cancer running vest wearing the number 37114 and join the thousands of runners that will start the race. Regarding the Charity David says “I decided early on that I wanted to raise money for a Cancer Charity. Most people including myself have known people who have suffered with the disease and as I also have two children, Joe & Mollie, it just seemed right to put the two together and run for Children with Cancer. My original aim was to raise £1,500 but with the aid of “Team Kirkham” and generous friends and family the fundraising pot currently stands at £6,160. This is an amazing sum of money and far beyond what I thought we could achieve.”
Team Kirkham will all be travelling up to the race together so we will be there to cheer David on and I will certainly look forward to buying him a well earned beer at the end of the race. We are very proud of what David has achieved and it has been an inspiration to us all. The training has been full on yet rewarding although it would have been nice to see some sunshine and feel some warmth along the way.

If anyone would like to sponsor David then please go to the donation site at Team Kirkham Donation Pageand search for Dave Kirkham and the listing will be displayed with the header ‘Team Kirkham’ together with a photo of the four members.
